CEFPI Symposium:
Safety & Security in the Education Environment

Tuesday, December 3rd, San Antonio, Texas

Pat Lamb

Scott Layne

Safety for schoolchildren has the nation's attention. Every aspect of educational safety and scrutiny is under review and school districts are contemplating best practices to employ to safeguard both students and staff. Scott Layne, Assistant Superintendent Support Services and Pat Lamb, Director of Security & Operations, Irving Independent School District, will lead the discussion on developing a learning environment free from violence and the threat of violence. Planning for 21st century learning and sustainability must also include community participation. As Mr. Lamb affirms, "In many ways, safety and security of children is up to you! We gladly co-labor with our police department and parents in the effort to create safe learning environments for our children."

Learning Objectives:

  •   Understand the broad threat – violence can erupt with or without provocation, within or without the school. What do you see and what do you hear?
  •   Explore the philosophy of planning, prevention, mitigation and response.
  •   Understand what is in place to help secure students, teachers and staff, such as physical barriers and general security processes.
  •   Understand that technology alone does not keep people safe.
  •   Learn the basic elements of a security system: staffing, procedures, infrastructure and crisis communications.
  •   Realize that everyone is needed to help and make the systems work.
