Transportation — Getting to Kansas City, Missouri

Whether taking a plane, train, car or motor-coach, getting to Kansas City is a breeze. Kansas City’s location, visitor-friendly airport and extensive highway and interstate networks assure you will arrive with ease. Below, you will find a brief list of helpful transportation info and links.



By Air

Kansas City is the most centrally-located major metropolitan area in the United States, making it accessible from nearly anywhere in the nation. If you’re flying, Kansas City is just a three-hour flight from either coast. Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is located 19 miles northwest of downtown Kansas City.

By Car

Among the 100 largest cities in the United States, Kansas City is the most centrally located in the lower 48 states and within driving distance from the entire Midwestern US.

The primary parking garage for the Kansas City Convention Center is the Auditorium Plaza Parking Garage, also known as the Barney Allis Plaza Parking Garage. The parking garage is located between 12th and 13th Streets and between Central and Wyandotte Streets. It is south of the Marriott Hotel and north of the historic Municipal Auditorium. By Train

Amtrak service is available to/from Kansas City. Less than 10 minutes from the KCCC and EDspaces hotels, Kansas City’s historic Union Station is on the free streetcar line. Taxi service is also available.

Van and Car Service

EDmarket has secured discount rates from SuperShuttle. Make your reservations online or call 800-BLUEVAN (800 258-3826) to schedule service using the discount code (84N3L). There is a $3 fee for making a reservation by phone. The discount code is good for travel from October 16th – November 4th, 2017.

When you arrive at MCI, simply collect your luggage and check in at the SuperShuttle office located just across from baggage claim inside the terminal(s). You may also download the SuperShuttle app to check in, track your van, etc.

Rideshare Service

Uber operates in an around Kansas City.

Taxicab Service

Courtesy phones for taxi service are located both inside and outside the terminal at each baggage claim area and at other strategic locations outside the terminal exits. Make sure that you give the dispatcher your exact location, and you will be given the vehicle number. If calling from a personal phone, call (816) 243-2345.

Taxi rates are $2.50 plus $2.10 per mile. Traveling from the airport to downtown via taxi will cost about $50. Rates may vary due to traffic delays and waiting time. Fares may be pro-rated (shared) when the originating passenger requests it and all other passengers agree.

Notice: City ordinance requires taxicab operators to take all trips regardless of length. If short-trip service is refused, obtain the name and vehicle number of the cab and report it by calling (816) 243-5237.

Beware: It is also illegal for drivers to solicit your business without invitation (i.e., curbside).

Bus Services

RideKC operates to and from the airport (MCI) every day of the week. RideKC buses accept cash and 31-Day Bus Passes. The regular fare one-way to or from the airport (MCI) is $1.50. Reduced fare for eligible seniors, youths and persons with disabilities with a reduced farecard or Medicare card is $0.75.

Fareboxes accept exact change only; if you do not have exact change the driver can issue a change card that holds a credit. Inform the driver before inserting money into the farebox if you want a change card.

Getting Around Kansas City

The Metro

Kansas City’s public bus system, serves all of the major metropolitan areas, plus most adjacent communities. The Metro operates at MCI Monday through Friday.


The Max

The Metro Area Express (MAX) bus rapid transit line connects the River Market, Downtown, Crown Center and the Country Club Plaza entertainment districts with fast, frequent and easy-to-use service. Easily identifiable traffic shelters are located along the route with real-time digital displays indicating next bus arrival time and connecting service.

Streetcar

The two-mile, north-south Ride KC Streetcar line runs from River Market to the historic Union Station, traveling mostly along Main Street. Areas serviced will also include the Central Business/Convention District, the Power & Light District and Crown Center—not to mention the numerous business, restaurants, art galleries and residences along the way.
